These days I wonder if we should perhaps consider our national identity as a marriage between two basic perspectives. Clearly, the honeymoon is long forgotten as we are currently separated with no reconcilliation in sight.
Guess what, as with any marriage, at least any marriage that involves kids, there is more at stake than just the two parties. It seems to me we either need to get a divorce, or we need to get some serious counciling and work this shit out. I for one think counciling and reconcilliation is the way to go. But you gotta stop cheating on us with a convicted felon and insurrectionist. He is a clear homewrecker and the only way forward is if you breakup with him.
In the meantime, if you want to sit down and work on a way forward that saves us all from more misery, and I do mean ALL of us, then I am ready and willing.
Because, I love you. I love our big diverse American family. And, I am committed to working this out. Are you?

Something borrowed, Way Down In The Hole from the HBO series, The Wire, because the devil is on the loose. Did you know this song was covered by 4 different artists for the TV show? The 4 versions plus the original version by Tom Waits were each used as the intro for the 5 seasons The Wire ran, from 2002-2008. This version (my favorite) is by The Blind Boys of Alabama who have their own Jimmy Carter, the oldest member and co-founder of the group who, when asked about what inspires his music said,
“I started singing for the Lord and I ain’t finished yet.”

With the hard-core division in this country and indeed the world, take a moment today to do something a little uncomfortable. Noone said kindness was always going to be easy.
Find someone you know stands firmly in “the other camp,” whichever camp that may be, and reach out to them. Try to find common ground, even if that is a song you both happen to like. Build on that. Don’t try to solve all the issues today. Just offer a little kindness and a willingness to listen. That is a good start.
